What is the fruit of the soul?  Hatred of self and love of Me.  This hate and love are the issue of self-knowledge; and then he knows himself defective and  to be nothing and sees in himself, My goodness which conserves him in good will and  sees the person that  I have made him, in order that he may serve Me in greater perfection, and judges that I have made him for the best, and for his own greatest good.

     Such a man as this, dearest daughter, does not wish time in his own way, because he is  humbled, and knowing his infirmity, he does not trust in his own will but is faithful to Me.  He clothes himself in My highest and eternal Will because he sees that I neither give nor take away, save for your sanctification; and he sees that love alone impels Me to give you sweetness and to take it from you; and for this reason one cannot grieve over any consolation that might be taken from himself, within or without, by the demon or by fellow creatures, because he sees that, were this not for his good, I would not permit it.

     Whence this man rejoices because he has the light within and without and is so illumined that, when the devil approaches his mind with darkness for confusion, saying, "This is for thy sins", he replies like a person who shrinks not from suffering, saying, "Thanks be to my Creator who has remembered me in the time of darkness, punishing me by pain in finite time.  Great is this love, which does not wish to punish me in infinite time".

     Oh how much tranquillity of mind has this soul, because he has freed himself from the self-will which brings storms!  But not thus, does he, whose self-will is lively within, seeking things in his own way:  who appears that he believes that he knows what he needs better than I.

     And often times he says, "It seems to me that I am offending God.  Take away from me the offense,  and do what You will". This is a sign that the offense is taken away, when you see in yourself the goodwill of not offending  God, and the displeasure of sin; whence you should take hope.

RIVELAZIONE DEL SACRO CUORE

Cognoscimento di sè medesimo

Santa Caterina da Siena,             Secolo XIV

Quale è il frutto dell'anima? l'odio di sè, e amore di me.  Il quale odio e amore sono esciti dal cognoscimento di sè medesimo; e allora cognosce, sè, difettuoso, non essere niente; e vede in sè la bontà mia, che gli conserva la buona volontà; e vede la persona che io l'ho fatto, perchè mi serva in maggiore perfezione; e giudica che io l' ho fatto per lo meglio e per più suo bene.

     Questo tale, carissima figliuola, non vuole il tempo a suo modo, perchè è umiliato; e cognoscendo la sua infirmità, non si fida del suo volere: ma è fedele a me.  Vestesi della somma ed eterna volontà mia, perocchè vede che io non do nè toglio, se non per vostra santificazione; e vede che solo l'amore mi muove a dare a voi la dolcezza, e torvela: e per questo non si può dolere di veruna consolazione che gli fusse tolta o dentro o di fuori, o dal dimonio o dalle creature; perchè vede che se non fusse suo bene, io nol permetterei.

     Onde costui si gode, perocchè egli ha il lume dentro e di fuori; ed è sì illuminato che, giugnendo il dimonio colle tenebre nella mente sua per confusione, dicendo: "questo è per li tuoi peccati";  ed egli risponde come persona che non schifa  pena, dicendo: "grazia sia al mio Creatore che s'è ricordato di me nel tempo delle tenebre, punendomi per pena nel tempo finito.  Grande amore è questo, che non mi vuole punire nel tempo infinito".
     Oh quanta tranquillità di mente ha quest'anima, perchè s'ha tolta la volontà, che da tempesta!  Ma non fa così colui che ha la volontà dentro viva, cercando le cose a suo modo: che par che egli creda saper meglio quello che gli bisogna, che io.

     E spesse volte dice: "mi ci pare offendere Dio.  Tollami via l'offesa, e faccia ciò che vuole".  Questo è segno che v'è tolta l'offesa, quando vedete in voi buona volontà di non offendere Dio e il dispiacimento del peccato; onde dovete pigliare speranza.
