At the eighth Response, "Ora pro popolo", Gertrude (grieving for the infirmity which detained her in bed) saw the Queen of Virgins came, bending her knee before the Lord, as the mediatrix between Him and the religious, praying for each individually; but her divine Son raised her up respectfully and placed her near Him on the throne of His glory, granting her full authority to command what she would.

She, then, desired the choir of Powers to surround the convent and to defend it mightily against the wiles of the ancient enemy. The angels immediately obeyed the orders of the Queen of Heaven, and, joining their shields together, encompassed the convent on all sides.

Come Mediatrice

Santa Gertrude La Grande, Secolo XIII

Durante il canto del versetto dell'ottavo responsorio, "Ora pro popolo", Gertrude, triste perchè a letto con un'infermità, vede la Vergine regale che avanzò verso il Signore e, piegando devotamente le ginocchia, pregò come mediatrice fra Egli e le religiose. Il Divin Figliolo, però, la rialzò con grande deferenza e, facendola sedere al suo fianco sul suo trono di gloria, le conferì potere illimitato per comandare ciò che le piacesse.

Subito essa ordinò alle Potenze celesti di circondare la Comunità e difenderla con forte braccio contro le mille insidie dell'antico nemico. Gli angeli obbedirono immediamente alla Regina dei cieli e accostando i loro scudi, circondarono da tutte le parti la Comunità stessa.
