A Consuming Fire
(editor's note: The saints are men and women like us, who pursued sanctity in their effort to live as the Divine Master teaches us. Their insights and examples can enlighten and inspire us! This is one of many excerpts from the writings of the saints submitted by Richard S. - who we thank for sharing this with our visitors, members and friends here!)
Saint Alphonsus Liguori,
(1696-1787)
This (Blessed) Sacrament above all inflames the soul with divine love.
"God is love (1Jn.IV,8)". And He is the fire which consumes in our
hearts all earthly affections: "The Lord thy God is a consuming fire (Dt.IV,24)".
Now the Son of God came precisely to kindle this fire of love: "I am come
to cast fire in the earth"; and He added than He did not desire other that
to see ignited this holy fire in our hearts: "and what will I, but that
it be kindled? (Lk.XII,49)". And oh what flames of divine love Jesus
Christ ignites in each one who devoutly receives Him in this Sacrament!
REVELATIO SACRATISSIMI CORDIS
JESU
Ignis Consumens Sanctus Alphonsus de Ligorio,
(1696-1787) Praesertim autem
hoc Sacramentum animas divino amore inflammat. "Deus caritas est
(1Jn.IV,8)". "Ignis consumens est (Dt.IV,24)", omnes terrenos cordis
nostri affectus devorans. Hunc amoris ignem Filius Dei his in terris
accensurus venit: "Ignem veni mittere in terram", neque aliud cupit, nisi
sacris his flammis hominum pectora ardere: "et quid volo, nisi ut accendatur?
(Lu.XII,49)". O quas divinae caritatis flammas Jesus Christus suscitat
Sagramento!
