Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Augst 12 A..D. 2010

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Ezekiel 12:1-12
Psalm 78:56-57, 58-59, 61-62
Matthew 18:21 - 19:1

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Some time ago a college student approached me, being the professor, at the beginning of a course and informed me that she needed at least a "B-" for the course. She was startled by my response, "What do you plan on doing to earn it?"

In some ways our spiritual lives are like taking a course, except that instead of getting a grade, we want to know how we are doing in our relationship with God and with our fellow-travelers on life's journey.

Throughout time, God has directed us through the prophets and with the directives and teachings of Christ. We have, for instance, the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes and the teachings of the Church. Christ even taught us how to pray, and so we have the beautiful prayer that we learned as children, The Our Father.

Throughout our lives we have probably prayed that prayer thousands of times. There is one line that points up the key message of the gospel of today, the gospel known as the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant. (see Matthew 18:35) The line in the Our Father is, "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us." We are asking God to judge us according to how we forgive those who have harmed us in some way. It is a powerful statement and one to think about.

We long for eternity in heaven, but like my student wanting at least a "B-," each of us has guidelines to follow. God gifted us with free will. The choices we make are our own.
