Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Augst 6 A..D. 2010

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14
Psalm 97:1-2, 5-6, 9
2 Peter 1:16-19
Luke 9:28b-36

A reflection on today's Scripture:

This is my chosen Son; listen to him. (Luke 9:35)

Today's scripture answers a question frequently heard from those seeking God: "Why did He create us; what is the purpose of life?"

The Old Testament tells us that God made us in His image by giving us a human spirit through which He can communicate with us, with His Spirit. His purpose is to share His blessed and holy life with His chosen people by teaching them to live in His love and truth. Daniel received a vision from God to comfort His people, the Israelites, who had suffered invasion, destruction and being exiled. He was to assure them that in their renewed faithfulness to Him He would send them a Savior, an indestructible and glorious King who would lead His followers to victory over all their enemies.

Today's second reading from 2 Peter, on this feast of the Transfiguration, was written after this "King," Jesus Christ, had come from God the Father, who identified Him as the promised Savior offering them a new life. The Israelite hierarchy responded by arranging His crucifixion. Now the apostles declared Christ's identity by telling the people that they had witnessed Christ appearing in glory on the "mount of transfiguration" where they heard God the Father asserting that "Christ is my Son in whom I am well pleased."

This tells us that man must be attentive to His Word, for Christ is the light that will rise from the hearts of all believers to make Him known in the world. Christ is the hope of all Christians. His grace transforms us on earth in His holy Image by giving us victory over sin so that He may share with us His glorious eternal life.

Loving Father,
help us to live as Your children reborn in the Spirit, that our hearts may grow in love for all people and toward the life You have promised us in Christ. Amen.
