Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Augst 5 A..D. 2010

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Jeremiah 31:31-34
Psalm 51:12-13, 14-15, 18-19
Matthew 16:13-23

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Most of us are born into a family that loves us. We do not realize this love for a while; we just want our basic needs met. In the teen years, many test the boundaries of the family before realizing how significant family is in our lives. There is an unspoken bond that keeps the family unified and natural, and spiritual needs are met.

Today's reading from Jeremiah speaks of the New Covenant. The covenant is described as "I will place my law within them and write it upon their hearts: I will be their God, and they shall be my people." We need a home for our ongoing spiritual growth. Christ came and established the Church, and gave St. Peter the "keys to the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 16:19) We have the "home" and the love placed before us in the Church. When do we realize the significance of this gift?

Gazing at the heavens on a clear night, we see hundreds of stars in the sky. It is an awesome thought to appreciate that our Savior came to earth, this tiny planet, and established the Church as our home and guide. What a blessing we have!
