Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
Augst 2 A..D. 2010
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Palm 119:29, 43, 79, 80, 95, 102
A reflection on today's Scripture:
O Lord teach me your statutes. (see refrain, today's responsorial, Psalm 119)
We would do well to listen to the Lord, and in today's readings, the psalm is a concrete place to start:
Remove from me the way of falsehood,
Let my heart be perfect in your statutes,
From your ordinances I turn not away,
for you have instructed me.
The prophet Jeremiah tried again and again to get the people to repent and return to the Lord. They did not repent and then they paid the price! Again, the Lord spoke through Jeremiah that the yoke that was imposed was to last as long as the Lord decreed, not a moment less. The false prophet Hananiah told the people what they wanted to hear. Doesn't that sound a bit like today? He and the people paid an awful price. Will we?
In the reading from the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus had just heard of the death of John the Baptist; He withdrew to be by Himself – but the people followed to hear Him and to be healed by Him. This He did without thought to Himself. Evening came and then Jesus fed them. They received the Word and then the Eucharist? A miracle indeed!
We are all called to listen to the authentic Word of God and thus learn how to guide our lives, and our steps. We must reject the false prophets, eat The Food for the journey, and become His disciples.
In ancient times God spoke to man
Through prophets, and in varied ways,
But now He speaks through Christ His Son,
His radiance through eternal days.
The choice is ours!
