Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

July 26 A..D. 2010

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Jeremiah 13:1-11
Deuteronomy 32:18-19, 20, 21
Matthew 13:31-35

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Saints Joachim and Anne bring to mind a holy family: a holy family whose faithful spousal relationship contributed to the history of salvation. Faithful to the Lord and to each other, their love conceived Mary, the one who would be the "mother of my Lord." (see Luke 1:43) Thinking about this holy family, we realize they are the grandparents to Jesus, born as man.

Saints Joachim and Anne teach us about creating within the home, a school of faith. Mary, the young maiden to be visited by the angel Gabriel, has learned from their lessons of faith the workings of the Lord and the promise of salvation through a Messiah. The school of faith uses especially practices of prayer and deeds of goodness. This would mean we find their hope. Why else would one carry out the precepts of the law and the ordinances of faith? Was there not hope that the promise was true? And the promise of the Lord is a reason to return the love received. A holy family is one that is a school of faith, exemplifying faith, hope and love.

In the gospel Jesus describes the Kingdom of Heaven as a mustard seed. "It is the smallest of all seeds, yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants." (Matthew 13:32) Joachim and Anne can be thought of as part of the seed of the Kingdom of Heaven, a seed which comes to pass as the largest and most secure refuge. Jesus uses the example of yeast in leaven to teach us about the Kingdom of Heaven. Joachim and Anne can be recognized as part of the yeast, resting within the whole batch when all comes to pass, having helped it to come to be.

Saints Joachim and Anne are very inviting. Come and sit with them. About them we can say with the Alleluia verse of today's Mass:
The Father willed to give us birth by the word of truth,
that we may be a kind of first fruits of His creatures.
