Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
July 7 A..D. 2010
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Hosea 10:1-3, 7-8, 12
Psalm 105:2-3, 4-5, 6-7
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Today's first reading from the prophet Hosea seems a bit confusing.
The prophet starts by saying how prosperous Israel had been and how they had built many altars and sacred pillars. This would seem to be the right thing to do since anyone who prospers should especially give thanks to the Almighty. But then Hosea announces that God will destroy the altars and prosperity even to the point of removing the king. The problem is that Israel had not built these altars to Yahweh, the God of their fathers. They were built for some idol, probably Baal, and this was the sin of Israel: idolatry.
In the gospel reading, the Lord sends the twelve to announce that the kingdom of heaven was at hand to the "lost sheep of the house of Israel." In the centuries that separated Hosea from Jesus, the nation of Israel was still struggling with the same sins, primarily idolatry. And while they did not set up altars and pillars in Jesus' day, their idols were present nonetheless: money, power and perhaps even the Law itself. The tragic thing was that the religious leaders at that time could not see anything wrong!
As we pray today, here are some things to ask ourselves: What are my idols? What do I need to do to replace them with the one true God? Do I give thanks to the God of all eternity in both good times and bad?
shine your light on us all so that we see our idols for what they are
and see only You and Your glory.
