Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 117:1bc, 2
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Do not be unbelieving, but believe. . . . (see John 20:27)
Thomas, doubting Thomas! You have to really think about what he says in this passage. You can only interpret it one or two ways -- either "You guys are delusional -- ain't no way I'm buying into your mass hysteria," or "You guys are liars and I'll believe it when I see it."
Well, as a result, Thomas is a good stand-in for all of us. We are taught so well by the world to doubt everything, to suspect everything. We're such doubting people that even the proof that Thomas demanded wouldn't be likely to convince us.
And so, God uses this passage to tell each of us, regardless of how skeptical and distant we may be, each of us can be convinced. Each of us can ask for our own level of proof, but surprisingly, we'll find, like Thomas, when the time comes around, we won't need the proof. We will know in our hearts.
