Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

June 23 A..D. 2010

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

2 Kings 22:8-13; 23:1-3
Psalm 119:33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40
Matthew 7:15-20

A reflection on today's Scripture:

I have a very personal and sad story to share about my granddad. He is 94 years old and he denies the existence of God and has only been in church for weddings and funerals. For as long as I remember, he has always been like that.

I have talked to my granddad about this and asked him why he is this way. The story he tells is of his younger years living in Oklahoma. The depression and drought had wiped out the economy. There were regular visits to his small hometown by what he calls tent preachers who set up revivals. These men promised that God would send rain and relief if only they filled the offering plate to its fullest. Then, they left town and left it much poorer as many gave all they had based on these false hopes seeded by traveling preachers. My granddad believes these men were charlatans and they may have been. For this reason he believes all religion is false.

While I do not agree with my granddad and wish he would allow me to show him the Truth, I share this story to point out that there have been and always will be false prophets. Jesus warns us to watch out for wolves in sheep's clothing. Were these itinerant preachers of my granddad's youth, these very same wolves? We will never know and that is for God to determine. But Jesus has given us the ability to know the difference and discern the good from the bad.
