Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
June 21 A..D. 2010
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
2 Kings 17:5-8, 13-15a, 18
Psalm 60:3, 4-5, 12-13
A reflection on today's Scripture:
An easy trap to fall into is the one in which we not only judge our neighbor, but then compound it by putting it into words to others. Sometimes before we can even finish our words of judgment, we are reminded of the "wooden beam" that is in our own eye.
One can easily think of the prayer we use daily: The Lord's Prayer. In it we ask to have our "trespasses" forgiven only to the degree that we forgive "trespasses."
In our "me first" society, we are "trained" to judge others and limit our forgiveness. This is not the point that Jesus is telling to His disciples (and us) that we should stop judging and strive to see clearly.
In the first reading we hear that our Lord had warned His people, "Give up your evil ways and keep my commandments." They did not listen and the northern kingdom was ultimately lost. They did not "see" clearly.
In the first reading we hear that our Lord had warned his people "Give up your evil ways and keep my commandments…" They did not listen and the northern kingdom was ultimately lost. They did not "see" clearly.
We are told that "as we judge, we will be judged." This is Jesus speaking clearly to us about our journey to eternal life! The just judge is Jesus Christ; all He did, all He taught, was the Will of God. He, alone, is able to "discern reflections and thoughts of the heart!"
The Lord will help us, and answer us: with the words of the prophets, the words of Jesus, and also the Word of God written in our hearts. He so wants us to see!
"Who shall climb the mountain of the Lord and stand in His holy place? The innocent one, the one who is pure of heart!" (See Psalm 24:3-4)
