Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

June 16 A..D. 2010

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

2 Kings 2:1, 6-14
Psalm 31:20, 21, 24
Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Jesus has given us a wonderful list of proper behaviors we should follow when performing good deeds, giving to charity, praying and fasting.

When performing good deeds and giving to charity, we should do so in private so as not to be seen. Likewise, our prayer should be done in private. When we fast, we should maintain a healthy physical and emotional attitude, once again essentially keeping our fasting private. What is it with all this private stuff?

The answer is that these things are part of our deep and intimate relationship with God. He asks us to do all these things but to do them in a spirit of love and with the proper goal which is the glory of God. We can compare this to our human relations where we keep the deepest and innermost parts of our intimacies private and only known to the one with whom we are in love.

Performing these tasks in public for all to see removes them from the intimate relationship with God and makes their purpose something other than glory and praise of God.
