A reflection on today's Scripture:

After Three Days, They Found Him. . . . (Luke 2:46)

Like the disciples who were to come afterwards, it took the parents of Jesus three days to find Him in Jerusalem. In a sense, this story prefigures the later story in so many ways.

Put yourself in Mary's place (or Joseph's). You've been going along your merry way back home and you notice your son isn't with you. Well, that's no surprise -- it's a huge group traveling (for safety against bandits) and he's probably with the kids somewhere else down the line. So you set out looking and as you look it becomes more and more clear that he isn't with you at all. Somehow you managed to leave him back in Jerusalem.

Now, Jerusalem is a Holy City, but it is a city, filled with murderers, thieves, cutpurses, and slavers. Who knows what might have happened while you were off chatting with your friends! You hurry back to Jerusalem in utter panic and a little bit of despair. What if you don't find Him? What if He's dead? Think the thoughts of a mother who has lost her child amongst the clothes racks in a department store--now amplify that by days away and days of frantic searching.

And so the plummeting despair and real wrenching of heart when Jesus left His mother and the Apostles for the three days before His Resurrection. "We've lost Him; we've lost all meaning. . . ." But it is not so -- just as He is found in the temple, He is found in the Resurrection through which He comes to all people.

The loss in Jerusalem was a sign of the loss to come. And the finding in Jerusalem presaged the finding in the Resurrection -- a place where Jesus is still "about His Father's work."
