Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

June 5 A..D. 2010

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

2 Timothy 4:1-8
Psalm 71:8-9, 14-15ab, 16-17, 22
Mark 12: 38-44

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Convince, reprimand, and encourage through all patience and teaching. . . .
(see 2 Timothy 4:2)

Proclaim the word. Proclaim it persistently, proclaim it consistently.

But, the first step--the critical step, both for you and your audience--is to be in the word yourself. You cannot proclaim what you do not know. It simply isn't possible. You cannot proclaim what you know only second hand. The word must be in your heart, on your lips, and in your mind. This is the only way to know what to proclaim.

But we are the Good News for the world. We are the voice of God and the messengers of the Gospel. For each of us to fulfill that role, each of us must turn to God's word and meet Him there. We must pray to the Holy Spirit and turn to the Word of the Lord and listen to what God has for us there, understand it and carry it forward to the entire world.

We are nourished by the word--so much so that the Church has declared a reprieve for a soul in purgatory for spending just one-half hour a day in reading the scripture. Note this item from the handbook, Enchiridion of Indulgences:
Reading of Sacred Scripture:
While a partial indulgence is granted to those who read from Sacred Scripture with the veneration which the divine word is due, a Plenary Indulgence is granted to those who read for at least one half an hour.

Holy Mother Church has decided in her wisdom that the reading of scripture is so important to the body of Christ that it indeed blesses the whole body by relieving the suffering of a part thereof.

So, go and proclaim the good news--but first prepare yourself--God will use your preparation to bless those around you.
