Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

May 31 A..D. 2010

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Zephaniah 3:14-18a or Romans 12:9-16
Isaiah 12:2-3, 4bcd, 5-6
Luke 1:39-56

A reflection on today's Scripture:

The Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth seems to easily stir up many images. One is of the young Mother traveling in her early pregnancy, perhaps somewhat overwhelmed by the unfolding will of God. Another is of Elizabeth, a kind of great-aunt of Mary and herself an expectant mother. Their mutual joy is something to envision.

Most of all, there are the images which speak of faith, hope and love. Besides her greeting to Mary, Elizabeth's baby (John the Baptist) demonstrated recognition, leaping with joy in her womb. Elizabeth professes faith in speaking of Mary as "the mother of my Lord" and she praises Mary's faith saying, "Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled."

Who can resist the joy of Mary's hymn and not take note of its faith in God, its hope and its love, and especially the recognition of God's mercy?

Eventually it's time to leave the Gospel scene and return to daily life. What part of it will I take with me? Certainly there will be the images and a share of the faith, hope and love of Mary, Elizabeth and her baby.

Before leaving this feastday altogether, we could pause and meditate on today's instruction by St. Paul in his Letter to the Romans. Easily, we find in it the qualities of Mary and Elizabeth and see features of the Visitation which can guide our greetings, welcomes and visits, our departures and farewells. We can think of sincere love, of upholding the good, of mutual affection, of a fervent spirit and of hospitality. Finally, we can remember to incorporate into our daily lives blessings, rejoicing and humility which express true regard for others.
