Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

May 29 A..D. 2010

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Jude 17, 20b-25
Psalm 63:2, 3-4, 5-6
Mark 11:27-33

A reflection on today's Scripture:

By What Authority. . . . (see Mark 11:28)

Humans are creatures of the legal loophole. We're always trying to catch one another out. We're looking for reasons not to toe the line.

We see it here. One can almost hear the taunting schoolboy voices, "Who said you could do that?" All around Jesus this buzz of "who gave you permission?" As it was in the olden days, it remains now. How often do we find ourselves asking--"Why?" "Who said you could?" "You promised." How many times in our trials do we call out asking essentially, "By what authority?"

But we know.

We do not have even the meager excuses of the people of the time. We have seen some two thousand years of history after the Death and Resurrection of Jesus. We can see His imprint on history and we can know Him and love Him personally. We know "by what authority." We may not want to admit it. We may not want to give in. But we DO know! And knowing that Jesus has the authority of God, we also know that He commands our love as God.

So when we ask, by what authority, we should be ready to acknowledge "By the authority of the love I have for you." Because this is Jesus' answer to us! What He gives us, He gives for our good and the good of all those around us. His authority could be and is the power of God, but the authority He uses is the authority of real love.
