Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

May 19 A..D. 2010

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Acts 20:28-38
Psalm 68:29-30, 33-35a, 35bc-36ab
John 17:11b-19

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Listen carefully to St. Paul's first line from today's first reading: "Keep watch over yourselves and over the whole flock." We would be very wise to do as Paul instructs.

First, we are to keep watch over ourselves. For some reason, we fragile human beings find it so easy to get off the right track and wander into places we should not go. We fall for idols, sin and a variety of troubles, many times not even realizing what we are doing. Through daily prayer and an examination of conscience, we can make sure we are watching over ourselves and doing what we must do to attain holiness.

Second, we must watch over the whole flock. This is not just a job for our deacons, priests and bishops--it is a job for all of us. We need to watch over our children, brothers and sisters and even our parents to assist them in their walk with the Lord. Then, we are called to minister to others according to the gifts God has given us.

This short sentence gives us great guidance and keeps us going where we need to be going. Listen to what Paul says, "Keep watch over yourselves and over the whole flock. . . ."
(see Acts 20:28).
