1 Corinthians 15:1-8
Psalm 19:2-3, 4-5
A reflection on today's Scripture:
The Church is built on the foundation of the apostles.
Jesus said: "Whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father." (John 14:12) The various apostles' feastdays throughout the year are good days to meditate on the works they have done and the works that Jesus did.
The apostles are the foundation, because they raised up the Church and laid down their lives for the Church. As Jesus entered the world, so the apostles entered through the Spirit into the lives of those who became the stones of the living temple. The Word of Life had come into the world and they brought the Word of Life into the lives of those who were, to use Paul's terms, once far off.
Jesus promised that the temple would be torn down and then raised up in three days. Through the apostles, the Good News has incorporated believers into the living temple, the Body of Christ. As Jesus gave Himself once for all, the apostles, custodians of the Eucharist, made it available, thus the Body and Blood are given for you.
As Jesus called and formed the apostles and disciples, they set aside others to share in the mission and ministry of Christ, the sacramental life of the priesthood of all believers and the sacramental reality of bishop and priest ordained to bear the likeness of Christ, the Head and Shepherd. In all of this, as Paul attested, they enjoyed the appearances of the Risen Christ so that through their works, the presence of the Risen Christ has been made known throughout the world.
On the feast of these apostles, Philip and James, each Christian can renew the holy participation of the baptized in the way of Christ. Each of us can meditate on and proclaim His truth, and cultivate the indwelling of His life. Good works, inspired by the example of the apostles, can shine forth from us, bringing praise to the heavenly Father.
