Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 66:8-9, 16-17, 20
A reflection on today's Scripture:
All is a gift! All we are and all we have is a gift!
Of ourselves, we can do nothing. Faith, too, is a gift, the seeds often having been nurtured by another: our parents, godparents, grandparents and religious education teachers. What then can we do with this gift when we are old enough to be responsible for ourselves?
The gospel of St. John gives us some direction stating, "Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from Him comes to me." (John 6:45)
What is required of us to be good listeners?
First, a humble, respectful attitude is important. Probably most of us have met the person who keeps interrupting other people because they believe their own thoughts are more important. We can expand on this to ask ourselves, "Do we really want to hear what the Father might be saying to us?"
Another quality necessary to listen is to have an inner silence, a sense of peace. It is very difficult to hear what another is saying when we are very upset or absorbed by something. This also brings us to consider our ability to be selective about what we choose to see, hear and read.
What are we allowing to consume our hours of thought each day? So much of the news, for instance, is repetitive. How many times do we need to hear it? Wouldn't it be better to shut off the radio, TV or computer, to give ourselves some time to reflect on life?
These are just a few thoughts to consider about our ability to listen and hear what God is saying to each of us. We wouldn't want to miss that message, would we?
