Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

April 10 A..D. 2010

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Acts 4: 13-21
Psalm 118:1 and 14-15ab, 16-18, 19-21
Mark 16:9-15

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Proclaim the Gospel to Every Creature. . . . (Mark 16:15)

The good news is not good for humankind alone. Indeed, in our fall, nature fell also. This is the mercy of God--how could fallen man live and survive in unfallen nature? To keep us whole and help us survive, God allowed the consequence of our sin to spread into the natural world and allowed the natural world to fall with us so that we might have sustenance and comfort.

And so the Good News is good for all creation. With our redemption is the redemption of all of nature. What this means is not entirely clear, but we are told to proclaim the Gospel to every creature. St. Francis certainly did so, and we can do so as well.

St. Francis practiced a "preach always, use words when necessary" way of life. We can preach to all of nature by good example, how we treat each other. We can show the world the redemption of Christ in the love we show to fellow human beings and to fellow members of creation.

The greatest proclamation of the gospel is the proclamation of our love for God and one another. This proclamation, louder in actions than in words, spreads throughout creation and transforms it bit by bit.

So, "go out and proclaim the Gospel to every creature." You may find sometimes that the grass and the trees make a more attentive audience than do many people. But we never do wrong, singing with Joy the song of God's Love. Perhaps in loving what God has so generously granted us, some may overhear and come to love Him, too.
