A reflection on today's Scripture:

The three "pillars" of Lent are prayer, fasting and charity. These concepts are given as a guide to help us strengthen our relationship with Christ and with the community in general. The gospel of today gives us the image of Lazarus, definitely in need of a little charity from someone. He is hungry and in need of some physical care. His needs go unmet.

It seems Lazarus is still with us. Ask anyone returning from their mailbox. We commonly receive multiple requests for donations from very worthwhile agencies or individuals. We also see "Lazarus" in the tired child in the grocery cart at mealtime, the hassled clerk in the store, the elderly person sitting unattended in a nursing home, the teenager being bullied by their peers. The needs are all around us. At times it can seem overwhelming! How are we to come up with the material and spiritual means to do our part to help "Lazarus"?

Perhaps there is no simple answer and the methods would be different for each person depending on their circumstances. Several things are necessary, however. First, it is key that we CARE. To call ourselves Christians and be indifferent or lukewarm in matters like this is a contradiction. Many people have a general plan about how much they can afford to contribute to charity. Our spiritual energy comes, of course, from God. We can turn to Him anytime for direction and grace as He is always there for us. A smile, a handshake or a phone call do not cost us much, and that might be all someone needs at the time. Lent is a good time to reflect on how we are addressing the needs of "Lazarus" in our lives.
