Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
1 Peter 5:1-4
Psalm 23:1-3a, 4, 5, 6
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Faith, we know, is a gift from God.
Jesus teaches this in His response to Peter's profession that Jesus is "the Christ, the Son of the Living God." The Father is the source of Peter's inspiration and knowledge. The Father gives the gift to Peter. Peter must make his act of the will to declare it to Jesus. What follows is the defining mission for Peter. He is the rock upon which Jesus will build His Church.
In the season of Lent, I might pray and meditate on God's gift of faith in my life and the manner in which I exercise my will to exhibit my faith. I might pray about the mission I have as a member of the Body of Christ, the Church, a mission defined by the Father's plan, by Baptism and each sacrament I have received.
As the Vicar of Christ, the Pope's solemn duties communicate the teaching of Christ. The "cathedra" is the chair used by a bishop or by the Pope. The church it is placed in is the "cathedral." Having a day designated to consider the Chair of Peter is to inspire us to think about how God continues to work in our midst, as He did with Peter, through the successors of St. Peter, the popes, who teach from the faith in Christ. The gospel helps us consider that different times for the Church may be very difficult, but the devil will not prevail.
As a result, in this season of Lent, I might pray about how well I respect the Holy Father, read and reflect on what he is teaching (often reported in Catholic newspapers, magazines and now online). God is prepared to inspire me if I open myself to the voice of His Vicar and profess with Peter, the Creed.
