Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

January 18 A..D. 2010

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

1 Samuel 15:16-23
Psalm 50:8-9, 16bc-17, 21 and 23
Mark 2:18-22

A reflection on today's Scripture:

But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day. (Mark 2:20)

An incomparable bliss permeated me on my wedding day, and although it was thirty years ago, I'll never forget the joy. The man of my dreams had come into my life and for the first time in years, I began to remember some of what I'd been taught in Catholic school, and thought, "How blessed am I to marry such a perfect work of God." In return, I touched his life with a spark of Light - that combination of huge love and a little faith began working a very small miracle in my soul.

Now years later, I understand that my joy had come to me not only because I was so in love, but even more because the gift I was about to receive was being given by Christ - the Bridegroom who loved and gave His life over to His Bride, the Church, where we'd soon be married. My joy was true because He was so very close to us.

This is the joy Christ is describing to the disciples of John and of the Pharisees in today's Gospel He is pressing us toward our responsibility concerning our Christian vocation. We don't have to marry to experience the gift of His Divine Love. That unmatched joy of meeting our Bridegroom can be relived over and over once we discover His presence within us. We do this by decreasing ourselves through prayer and fasting, and, although we may often fall as we do in our own marriages and single-lives, we must keep striving to increase our spiritual lives by saying "I do," by our participation in the life of Christ, through His Bride, the Church, so that in the end, we may enjoy His promise, whose fulfillment will come to us through faith, hope, and always, love.
