Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
January 16 A..D. 2010
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
1 Samuel 9:1-4, 17-19; 10:1
Psalm 21:2-3, 4-5, 6-7
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Follow me. . . . (Mark 2:14)
Two words, three syllables. Not much in the way of instruction, and yet a lifetime to learn how to do it. Here our intrepid tax collector friend says, "Sure, I'll do it." And the next thing you know he's repaying four-fold!
It would seem to be easy to follow Jesus. He gave us His life, His Saints, His Church, His Work; He gives us His Body and Blood for food, His priests for guides and shepherds. And yet, we all know it is far easier said than done.
But the key is to do it as you hear it. Not to wait and say, "Yes, Lord, I'll serve you just as soon as I get this other thing I need to do done. No, Matthew (Levi) got up immediately when Jesus said follow, and he was on the trail. It's the only way that it works. If we overthink it, we will think ourselves out of it entirely.
