Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

January 9 A..D. 2010

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

1 John 5:14-21
Psalm 149:1-2, 3-4, 5-6a and 9b
John 3:22-30

A reflection on today's Scripture:

So this joy of mine is made complete. . . . (see John 3:29)

Someone rushes into the room and says to you - - "Do you know that Jake is doing your job? Right now he's out there taking care of business and you're just sitting here letting him?" What is our reaction? Blind panic - - who is starting to do the work assigned to me? What happened to my job? What am I supposed to do?

How much more devastating must it be when your job is Herald of the Messiah and with the advent of the King of Angels, you know that your work is done. What remains for you to do? And yet John takes this in stride - - the time has come, what was to be fulfilled is fulfilled and my joy is complete in it. Perfect peace, perfect serenity, perfect knowledge.

Each of us has a mission. In these days of noise and upset it is difficult sometimes for us to identify the task and to accomplish it as needed; however, that does not mean the task is not there for us. Our joy is made complete in the completion of our mission. When we can see God's will accomplished through us, we do not need to worry about what those around us are doing or how that encroaches on us. There is work enough and more - - the harvest is plentiful, the laborers are few. So rather than panicking that someone else is accomplishing the task set for us, let our joy be complete that God's will is being worked throughout the land.
