Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
1 John 1:5 -- 2:2
Psalm 124:2-3, 4-5, 7cd-8
A reflection on today's Scripture:
This biblical story is familiar to many Catholics. Rachel mourning her children in Ramah is found in Jeremiah 31:15-16. "Her children are no more." What a terrible experience!
Using a method from St. Ignatius, enter the scene of this gospel. Picture Joseph, Mary and Jesus: the revelation through the angel and Joseph's response, gathering up Mary and Jesus to flee. Be with Joseph, protecting them. Sense the isolation and the fear.
Be there with those whose innocent ones are being massacred. Perhaps they had seen some of the glory of the Lord at the birth of Jesus and wondered when the Magi came to see the newborn king. Others would not be so familiar with this child. When the soldiers come, it is another round of heavy boots trampling down their lives. And worse: this raid is to kill the boys, two and under. The reason for this terror is a mystery to most of them, and if they knew something of Jesus what difference does that make to them now?
The Flight into Egypt and the massacre of the Holy Innocents foreshadows the Passion of Christ. Soldiers will come to crucify him. Mary, His mother will weep like Rachel.
If we stay a moment longer with the Holy Innocents, we will deepen our awareness of the suffering of the innocents in a world where boots of different forms are loosed against their lives.
The purity of these Holy Innocents delivers them as martyrs to heavenly glory. That innocence before the age of reason delivers little ones again and again. But, it does not seem to stop Rachel from weeping for her children. This gives rise to our prayer and petition for human life.
