Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
December 10 A..D. 2009
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 145:1 and 9, 10-11, 12-13ab
A reflection on today's Scripture:
In today's Gospel Jesus plainly says, "Among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the Kingdom of heaven is greater than he." It is a strange statement because it's hard to fathom how we could be greater than John, yet that's what Jesus said!
Without the aid of commentaries or outside opinions, and just the use of my own faculties, I've tried to grasp how we, the least, could be greater. For me there is no reasonable explanation. I just have to accept Jesus at His word.
That being said, what does it mean in terms of our response? Does it mean we have greater opportunities to prepare the way of Lord, to make straight His path, to urge people to recognize their sinfulness and need for repentance, to risk our lives by not turning a blind eye to sinful behavior (even that of the most powerful), to tell others they are on the brink of eternal disaster, to have our heads figuratively or even literally chopped off?
If it is so, we will need God's grace, a lot of it! Where will we get it?
At each and every Mass we have that opportunity, (the opportunity that John never had), not only to behold the Lamb of God, but also to be among those who receive Him - Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. John never had that singular grace. For him, the kingdom of God had not yet been open by the saving death and resurrection of Jesus.
We have greater opportunities than John ever did, not just to announce the coming of the Kingdom, but also to partake of it. Indeed, the lowly have become great!
