Psalm 19:8, 9, 10, 11
A reflection on today's Scripture:
On the First Sunday of Advent, the Church leads us to pray "that the dawn of His coming may find us rejoicing in His presence and welcoming the light of truth" (Alternative opening prayer).
Today, we learn that St. Andrew welcomed the call of the Lord and rejoiced in His presence. He welcomed the "Light of Truth."
Andrew was a young fisherman, physically fit from labor, and apparently reflective. Nothing suggests that he was a man of ill-will and deeply sinful, needing God's intervention, when the Lord called him. He could have well made his way in the world as a just man. Still, he recognized the dawning of the new light of truth. It was an advent.
With Philip, Andrew presents the Greeks to Jesus. They had come with desire, "We want to see Jesus!" (1 John) Their experience of an advent, the dawn of the light of truth shining upon them, is the result of Andrew and Philip's discipleship. When the crowd was hungry and Jesus would not send them away, Andrew saw the boy with the loaves and fishes. He is part of a foreshadowing of the Eucharist, through which Christ the Lord invites us to welcome His coming and rejoice in His presence.
One day, as an apostle, Andrew will be crucified. The dawn of the Lord's coming becomes, through death, the bright light of everlasting life. One could cultivate Andrew's way of recognizing the dawn of Christ's coming, rejoicing in His presence and welcoming the light of truth for Advent.
