Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
November 20 A..D. 2009
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
1 Maccabees 4:36-37, 52-59
1 Chronicles 29:10bcd, 11abc, 11d-12a, 12bcd
A reflection on today's Scripture:
My house shall be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves. (see Luke 19:46)
Today's underlying theme is the preservation of God's sovereignty over human hearts. This is revealed in "Maccabees" at the purification and rededication of the Temple following His people's victory over Gentile invaders who had defiled it. Their homage to God joyfully affirmed it was not human strength but God's power that had prevailed in battle.
Jesus asserts God's sovereignty and His Messianic authority in His evicting the money changers from the Temple; their greed and dishonesty had rendered offering sacrifices unduly burdensome, obscuring its purposes. Their worst thievery was turning people's hearts from God to worldly considerations.
By analogy, Christ's action also shows His broader purpose, one that becomes clear at Pentecost when His disciples are imbued with the Spirit. Temples are inanimate constructions; God's deepest concern is for human souls. Christ's Spirit, the Sanctifier, purifies the temple of our bodies He indwells; He removes worldly distractions and impurities that hinder our transformation into Christ's image. He makes us bearers of God's life in this world.
Continual yielding to God's will wins this painful battle of spirit over flesh. Our victory is assured in Christ and our cost minimal when measured by the joy and peace gained from union with God.
O Lord God,
enable us to view our bodies as living temples created to contain Your life. Grant us grace to allow Your Spirit to cleanse us of impurities that prevent Your light from shining forth from within us.
