Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

November 17 A..D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

2 Maccabees 6:18-31
Psalm 3:2-3, 4-5, 6-7
Luke 19:1-10

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Zacchaeus is converted! After Jesus tells Zacchaeus that He must stay at his house, Zacchaeus pledges half of all he owned to the poor, and offers to repay fourfold anyone he has ever defrauded. Yet people around them who heard this dialog, murmured. They knew that Zacchaeus was a sinner and could not understand why Jesus would stay with him.

I find myself so many times trying to "pigeonhole" people. Without knowing too much about them, I try to decide where they fit. How do they measure up to the Catholic faith? Exactly where are they in their faith journey? Where are their faults?

This is a very dangerous thing to do. Besides being wrong so many times, I also have to remind myself that God loves everyone. God loves every single human being on our planet. It does not matter if they are Catholic or Protestant or Jewish or live in a remote tribe in the middle of nowhere. God loves them just as much as He loves me.

This is the key to living our faith. It is the primary command that Jesus gave us next to loving God the Father with all our heart, our soul, and our strength, and that is we must love our neighbor as ourselves. We must try to love each person as God loves them.

O Loving Father,
Heal our spiritual blindness. Let us reorder our lives to become a time of preparation for our meeting with You.
