Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

November 12 A..D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Wisdom 7:22b8:1
Psalm 119:89, 90, 91, 130, 135, 175
Luke 17:20-25

A reflection on today's Scripture:

In today's gospel reading, our Lord tells the Pharisees that the kingdom was already present but the Pharisees simply ignored what He was saying. They were always looking for a sign that the great Messiah had come to free their land from occupation and restore greatness to the nation of Israel.

It seems that humans are always looking for signs. As I looked at the morning paper today I read where we are looking for a sign that the recession has ended and we are looking for a sign that progress was being made in the war in Afghanistan and we are looking for a sign that the flu epidemic is slowing. While looking for signs may be acceptable in some respects, our search for them seems to blind us to reality. Yes, we look for a sign that the economy is improving, but miss the fact that we remain a very blessed people even in these tough times.

Perhaps we are still looking for signs in our faith while missing the reality in much the same way the Pharisees did. Do you find that you are always looking to see that a prayer has been answered while missing the fact that God is always in control? Are there other times that you find yourself searching for a sign without realizing the grace God has showered upon you constantly? My friends, join me in stepping back and renewing our faith in God and realizing all the great blessings He gives us each day.
