Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Romans 14:7-12
Psalm 27:1bcde, 4, 13-14
Luke 15:1-10

A reflection on today's Scripture:

I remember the exact date it happened. My wife and I had worked hard and saved so we could pay our home off early. I went to my bank and had them issue a cashier's check for the payoff amount that I was going to take to the mortgage company. That morning I grabbed the file folder which held the paperwork and the check and went to work where I took the folder into my office for safe keeping until my appointment. When the time came, I picked up the folder, glanced inside and there was no check. The money we had worked so hard to save was gone. I was beyond frantic. I tore my office apart, but no check. I went to my car, but no check. I called my wife who tore the house apart, but no check. I was sick.

So, I left my office to go to the bank to see if they could somehow issue a new check and as I walked across the parking lot I spotted a piece of paper on the ground that had tire tracks on it from being run over. I picked it up and there it was - my check, a little dirty but still usable and now safe. My sickness turned into instant elation and to this day I remember the great emotional swing of the ordeal.

Jesus tells us that there will be "rejoicing among the angels of God over one sinner who repents," for one lost sheep that is found. Knowing how I felt when I found what was really something so temporal and irrelevant in the eternal plan I can only imagine this great rejoicing in heaven. God loves every single person so much that He sent His only Son as a ransom for all. Let us join in the rejoicing of the angels in our prayers for those who are lost and for those who are found.
