A reflection on today's Scripture:
In our gospel reading today we see our Lord handing out some very strong criticism of the religious authorities of the day, at the end of which the authorities begin to plot against them. He criticizes them for a number of things but one of the most important is summed up in His statement, "Woe to you, scholars of the law! You have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves did not enter and you stopped those trying to enter." What, exactly is Jesus accusing them of?
The scholars of the law were the priests and scribes whose duty it was to not only perform the liturgical functions of the temple but to teach the masses about the law and the prophets. They would regularly read from the scrolls of sacred scripture in the temples and synagogues. Where they went wrong was in their interpretation of the law and prophets.
Fact is, they missed the truth by a great distance and made it so hard for the people to conform to their teachings that it was almost impossible for the people to comply. And most of the time when this was happening the priests and scribes were themselves terribly hypocritical, showing great piety externally while being full of sin internally which prompted the Lord to call them white washed tombs. The result was, the priests and scribes did not enter the kingdom themselves and kept others from entering due to their false teaching.
There are warnings in scripture that we are not to add to or take away from the Word as God gave it to us. This is what the religious authorities did which brought strict condemnation from Christ.
