Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

October 6 A..D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Jonah 3:1-10
Psalm 130:1-4, 7-8
Luke 10:38-42

A reflection on today's Scripture:

I get so sick and tired of everything that is wrong in the world. I'm angry with people who, with so little effort, could be encouraging and kind; but instead, are irritating and constantly complaining. I detest the senseless killing and violence that is so prevalent within our world and I am plainly disgusted how some people seem to go out of their way to be unkind.

How much more, must God be disgusted, weary and at his wits end. Yet we hear the wonderful story about the very large city of Nineveh which repented from its evil ways and was graciously spared God's justifiable wrath. I sigh and wish that we would be like the Ninevites or had some very wise leader who would give us the life-sparing direction that the King of Nineveh gave his people.

But then I realize that God gave us more than discernment to recognize evil and how important it is to turn away from it. He gave us his Holy Spirit, our great Comforter and Guide, so that we would see our own self-righteousness and not just moan about the evil others do, but to recognize our own evilness and turn away from it. Then, we become like the King of Nineveh, giving live-giving example to a lost and doomed people.

O Dearest Lord,
you have enlightened the minds and hearts of those who seek you.
Send your Holy Spirit to remain with us. Give us the wisdom to
recognize our own sinfulness and the courage to be the leaders
that cry out with our words and actions to our Nineveh:
Repent and turn back to God.
