Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
October 2 A..D. 2009
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 79:1b-2, 3-5, 8, 9
Matthew 18:1-5, 10
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Each of us is unique.
Just as there are no two snowflakes the same, God created us to be ourselves and we have our own mission in life which no one else can accomplish. For that reason alone, the question of the disciples in the gospel of today seems strange. They asked, "Who is of the greatest importance in the kingdom of God?" (Matthew 18:1)
Christ responded by placing a young child in their midst and reminding them that they needed to become like little children. We might ponder these characteristics. Christ specifically mentioned being humbled. He went on to talk about receiving children in His name and not scandalizing them.
What opportunities has God provided us to be with children, as parents, aunts/uncles, godparents, and/or professionals? We thank God for the presence of children in our lives that we might learn from them.
Please, God, let us be open to their lessons. Amen.
