A reflection on today's Scripture:

Why did Herod wish to meet Jesus? This is an interesting question.

John the Baptist was very critical of Herod's marriage to his sister-in-law Herodias. Both Herod and Herodias had divorced so that they could marry each other and were in clear violation of the Mosaic Law and John's severe criticism of the couple no doubt led to his execution. While Herod was reluctant to have John killed, he carried out the act to appease his wife and niece.

When Herod began to learn about Jesus and His ministry, he thought that John the Baptist had been raised from the dead. Perhaps this is why he wanted to meet Jesus as it may have caused Herod some concern as Luke reports in his gospel, "At that time some Pharisees came to [Jesus] and said, 'Go away, leave this area because Herod wants to kill you.'" (Luke 13:31)

Another reason could have been that Herod was just curious. Or, perhaps, he wanted to be seen with important outstanding people of his time. Whether it was concern that John had come back or because he was curious or because he wanted to be seen with Jesus, the truth is that none of these seem to be for the right reason and as we know in the end Herod played a significant role in Christ's death.

We too must always check our motives when we seek to see someone. In our age it is all too easy to make celebrities our idols or because we are curious about their lifestyles. We should seek those who best model that which we desire to become and who are examples to us of the Christian life.
