Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

September 12 A..D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

1 Timothy 1:15-17
Psalm 113:1b-2, 3-4, 5 and 6-7
Luke 6:43-49

A reflection on today's Scripture:

A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good. . . .
(Luke 6:45)

Our first reading reminds us that acting on insufficient or false information can cause serious errors. Paul explains his reason for persecuting Christ's followers. His having been educated as a Pharisee led him to believe they were enemies of God and destructive to Judaism. However, he soon realized that "Christians" were actually fulfilling Judaism, God's salvation plan as was revealed in Scripture by their prophets.

Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 9, narrates Paul's conversion experience starting with his being confronted by the risen Christ, suffering three days of blindness but then being healed by Ananaias, Christ's envoy. This finally convinced Paul that Christ was truly "the Son of God," and he accepted being baptized into Him Who now called him to evangelize unbelievers. His miraculous conversion resulted in his exhorting Timothy to disregard all abuses and to bravely and fully teach Christ's true gospel of salvation.

In today's gospel Jesus explains that our human hearts and minds must be shaped by our knowledge of and sincere love for God. He infers that His critics are motivated not by love but by hate for Him Who has shown them the need for some radical changes in their laws and beliefs, errors caused by their superficial knowledge of God.

In their present state, their lack of a true connection with the Heart of God, they are like useless thorn bushes and brambles, unproductively occupying space better filled by fruitful grape vines and fig trees. Their one and only remedy is to rebuild their Faith on solid ground, the Messiah, the Word of God sent by their heavenly Father, now with them but unseen and unheard, for their senses are deadened by their flaccid, love-starved hearts.

O Blessed Redeemer,
Give us the wisdom and courage to see and to live in Your love and truth, to be able to see and reject all distortions caused by human ignorance or pride.
Amen.
