Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

September 10 A..D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Colossians 3:12-17
Psalm 150:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6
Luke 6:27-38

A reflection on today's Scripture:

I have worked over the years with a physician named Roger who had a reputation for being one of the meanest people one could encounter. In his medical practice he went through practice managers regularly because he would mistreat them in a variety of ways until they quit the job. He was known to yell at his employees without provocation, cut their wages for no reason and generally make their lives miserable. Those of us who watched from the outside were appalled at his behavior and, as a consequence, we all watched his practice deteriorate and his business decline.

He eventually hired a professional practice manager named Wanda who became something very unexpected to Roger and to all of us. She had spent most of her career with Catholic Health, but, what no one knew at the time, she was also a former nun whose entire life was in healthcare. Roger mistreated Wanda as he did everyone else but in return he got nothing but kindness, compliments and support in operating his practice. She learned that he loved apple pie and always seemed to have a fresh pie for him when he was at his worst. Over a couple years we saw Roger change into a much gentler version and his practice was revived. Wanda was rewarded with a series of significant bonuses for her work.

Wanda did exactly as Jesus tells us in today's gospel. She treated Roger as she wanted to be treated and not as Roger treated her. Her loving spirit changed a man and his business. Jesus knew what he was talking about and Wanda listened.
