Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

September 5 A..D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Colossians 1:21-23
Psalm 54:3-4, 6 and 8
Luke 6:1-5

A reflection on today's Scripture:

The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath. (Luke 6:5)

Today's first reading is taken from Paul's letter sent to the Colossians at the request of Epaphras* who had converted them to belief in Christ, but now were being troubled by a cult of false teachers.

The latter ignored Christ's saving mission and instead focused on useless beliefs. They placed great importance on angels and believed that spirits must be placated to avoid offending them. Also, ascetic practices and strict dietary rules were emphasized.

In brief, man's redemption, his need for forgiveness of sin, being reborn in Christ to a new life and being transformed in His holy image leading to salvation were virtually lost.

Paul's letter refuted the false teachings by warning the Colossians of the spiritual danger of straying from their faith in Christ and emphatically explained the major tenets of the true Christian faith.

Our gospel also touches on the Pharisees false teachings when they accused Christ's hungry disciples of unlawfully gathering grain heads to eat on the Sabbath.

Their law prohibited any sort of labor being done on that day, but Christ defends His disciples by citing David who led his followers into the temple to eat the loaves strictly reserved for the priests.

Jesus is saying that God's loving mercy, His providing for human needs, must take precedence over such restrictive practices. He also emphasized His authority when He said, "The Son of Man is Lord of the sabbath." This means that being a man, He has empathy for the human condition, and therefore His divine nature impels Him to place love above legalism.

O Heavenly Father,
You call us to live in the light of Christ;
may His guidance form our lives in Your truth
and our hearts in Your love.
Amen.
