Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

August 15 A..D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Revelation 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab
Psalm 45:10, 11, 12, 16
1 Corinthians 15:20-27
Luke 1:39-56

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.
(Luke 1:45)

Over the years numerous people, some of them Catholics, have asked me why we are so deeply devoted to Mary and why do we believe in the Assumption, stating that at Mary's death she was taken into heaven body and soul. Although this feast has been celebrated since the 7th century, it was not officially proclaimed a doctrine of our Faith until 1950 when Pope Pius XII exercised papal infallibility, and in consultation with the world's Bishops, declared it to be so.

While Scripture does not record this event, both tradition and theology support it by logically saying it is implicit that Christ would take His mother to Himself in heaven because she was immaculately conceived, free from all stain of original sin and thus worthy to abide with Him in her glorified body. The Archangel Gabriel sustains this by calling Mary His "highly favored daughter," a humble child chosen to conceive and bear His Son through the Holy Spirit's power. St. Francis de Sales confirmed the need for Mary's Assumption, for she exemplifies the "Essence" of the Church because she, body and soul, is the first of those perfected human beings who will people the new Church in the world when Christ returns.

To us, she is the light that shines forth to give us hope, comfort and guidance to assist the "People of God" in their journey to Christ. We believe that she, with the Saints, intercedes for us to complete the work that began with Christ being conceived in her womb. She has a truly unique relationship with The Blessed Trinity as a daughter, bride and mother.

O Blessed Father,
You have revealed the wonder of Your power by exalting a humble peasant girl of Nazareth by making her the mother of humanity's savior. May her prayers assist us to rise to eternal life toward completing Christ's saving mission.
Amen
