Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

August 12 A..D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Deuteronomy 34:1-12
Psalm 66:1-3a, 5 and 8, 16-17
Mark 18:15-20

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Some, I would guess, might wonder if God's promises will hold true for them, if they will find a place, after their desert wanderings, where God in His glory dwells?

The question is valid because even the Israelites, who directly interacted with Moses who saw God "face to face," faltered and slipped into grumbling, disobedience, and we might even think, disbelief. This fact demonstrates the absolute necessity of faith, and furthermore, the need to nourish our faith.

Faith is not something we earn or even assimilate by proximity, but a gift from God who offers it to everyone. Faith, however, like any gift that is to be profitable, must be unwrapped and used.

We cannot rely solely on the proximity of faith-filled people, just as the Israelites who faltered could not of themselves overcome their human doubts just because they had Moses in their camp. Instead we must constantly beg God to help us, so that in times of doubt we do not "cut and run," but stand firm, trusting that God is faithful and accomplishes all He wills.

How do we do that, except by actively seeking God's help through the power of His Word and the faith-sustaining gift of His grace that is poured out on us in His Sacraments?

Seek then the Lord in His Word and Sacraments, seek the Lord where and while He may be found.
