Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

August 11 A..D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Deuteronomy 31:1-8
Deuteronomy 32:3-4ab, 7, 8, 9 and 12
Matthew 18:1-5, 10, 12-14

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Today, on the memorial of St. Clare, our eyes settle on the passage in today's gospel: "Whoever becomes humble like this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven." This is St. Clare, the coworker with St. Francis, friend and spiritual companion.

Like Francis, she embraced poverty, chastity and obedience. She incorporated into her life the suffering of Christ. So, the Church prays today, "May we remain close to you, like Saint Clare, by accepting in our lives a share in the sufferings of Jesus Christ."

As the contemplative nun or monk cultivates an identity with the suffering of Christ through the monastic life, the baptized faithful, living in the world, embrace it in different ways.

The virtue and promise of poverty can be found in simplicity and responsibility in the use of earthly things, wisely selecting material possessions, ones that help sustain life, are useful, and some that incorporate beauty. Cultivating chastity requires a self-awareness of being a child of God, an appreciation of the gift of life from God that means each person has a soul, and finding joy in the love of neighbor. The energy of desire can support good work. Obedience requires keeping the covenant of baptism, vows of marriage and other promises. Think of these three virtues and how cultivating them requires sacrifice, a source of identity with Christ.

Let us pray:

"Lord, by the help of the prayers of St. Clare
may we come to the joyful vision of your glory,
in the Kingdom of heaven where the angels
look upon the face of our heavenly Father."
(from the opening prayer of the mass and from the gospel)
