A reflection on today's Scripture:

The First Reading and Gospel for today teach us, I think, some important and often-overlooked messages.

The first is that the Israelites, God's chosen people, forgot the wonders the Lord worked for them in Egypt and lost reverence for Him and doubted His power to bring them into a land, "flowing with milk and honey."

Although they escaped Pharaoh and crossed through the Red Sea as though on dry ground, when God laid out for them how they were to secure the Promised Land, they faltered and began to grumble and complain. They had lost faith in the absolute power of His might.

Because of their disbelief, they incurred God's anger and were consigned by Him to wander in the desert for forty years.

The Gospel on the other hand illustrates a pagan Canaanite woman's faith in the power of Jesus to accomplish anything He desires. She in turn receives a healing.

The contrast between the chosen people and the pagan woman becomes clear: it is a not a matter of birth or life's circumstances, but of faith.

For me, it is a reminder that though I have been "chosen" and have received membership into the Body of Christ through Baptism, I still have the responsibility to respond in faith or to suffer the consequences.

Finally, it alerts me to respect and, in fact, even to anticipate the faith-responses of those who, like the Canaanite woman, may not have been "called" as I have, but nevertheless hear the voice of God and respond.

The woman said, "Lord, help me."
Jesus said in reply,
"O woman, great is your faith!
Let it be done for you as you wish." (see Matthew 15:25 and 28)
