A reflection on today's Scripture:

Today is the very familiar Gospel story of Martha and Mary.

I don't know about you, but I always feel that Jesus is talking to me when He says, "Martha, Martha you are anxious and worried about many things."

In my own life I find that anxiety and fear originate from knowing that there are things in my life that I can't control and also from knowing there are some things that I can and should control.

Does that mean that everything is a potential source of anxiety and worry, or is there some remedy?

The answer is "Yes" and "Yes."

Yes, every thing can be a source of worry, and yes, there are some things that can help.

We see Martha respond to the circumstances of life by springing into action, like everything depends on her, while Mary, on the other hand, sits at Jesus' feet, knowing that everything depends on Him.

There is however, an important point to remember, as pointed out in John's Gospel. Martha has great faith, as evidenced by what she says, "If You (Jesus) had been present, my brother Lazarus would not have died." So for Martha, choosing to be busy is not a matter of having little faith, but of being habitually in motion.

Mary, on the other hand, has learned the habit of being still, to sit at the feet of Jesus, even when there is great commotion, so that He might impart to her the secrets of His heart, to calm her and give her His peace.

It is not, as we are sometimes inclined to think, that Mary herself is better, but that she has chosen the better path, a path that melts away worry and anxiety.

Wouldn't we all be well served then to develop a habit of prayerfulness? Wouldn't you agree with Jesus that it is the better part?
