Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

July 23 A..D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Exodus 19:1-2, 9-11, 16-20b
Daniel 3:52, 53, 54, 55, 56
Matthew 13:10-17

A reflection on today's Scripture:

In our first reading today we hear a wonderful description of what happened when Moses spoke with God on Mount Sinai. There was loud thunder and a trumpet blast that left everyone trembling. There was a thick cloud, lightning and the mountain was covered in smoke and fire. There was no doubt. God was there speaking to Moses and to His chosen people.

Sometimes I wish God would speak to me that way. Sometimes I want to hear Him in such a loud noise that it shakes my bones to the core. However, it never happens. But I still hear God speaking to me, and it is usually in the way we hear about in today's gospel. It is in His word that He speaks to me, just as He has spoken to countless others over the centuries. When I truly seek Him, He is there. Even in passages that I have read dozens of times He is there and I always find something new.

Jesus tells us how blessed we are because we see and hear, and that the prophets waited for ages in hopes of seeing what we see and hearing what we hear. There is no longer any reason for God to make a great sound to announce His presence. He is with us always.
