A reflection on today's Scripture:

Today, the Church holds up the example of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, the "Lily of the Mohawks."

When we think of Blessed Kateri we will think of an intense love for Jesus in the Eucharist and Jesus in the sick and suffering. Long before the phrase "Jesus in disguise" was introduced by Blessed Theresa of Calcutta to refer to the abandoned, sick and outcast, Blessed Kateri provided physical care to them in her community, extending the grace of Eucharistic charity and healing.

This shining witness teaches us to be open in our church communities to those seeking knowledge of the truth of Jesus Christ. As a native person, she teaches us to be opened to those from other cultures who have faith in the Lord and come to live with us.

Her journey to faith and perseverance is a sharp contrast to what Jesus condemns: "Woe to you, Chorazin!" and "Woe to you, Bethsaida!" As with Nazareth (see 14th Sunday, Mark 6:1-6a), the Lord is unable to work any "mighty deed" in these places and Kateri finds the Lord's deeds rebuffed by her community. This is rejection in one's native place.

Yet, she becomes a fountain of mercy and a source of inspiration. She is the Lord's mighty deed.

Blessed Kateri invites us to cleanse ourselves through the Lord in the earthly way of life (see the Prayer over the Gifts). This is not just striving for a material simplicity, but to be cleansed from prejudice and rejection of others, especially on the basis of racial and social differences.

She heard the Word of God and kept it. Thus she is called Blessed. How am I seeking this identification with the Lord?

Let us pray today for the native peoples of the Americas.
