Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

July 8 A..D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Genesis 41:55-57; 42:5-7a, 17-24a
Psalm 33:2-3, 10-11, 18-19
Matthew 10:1-7

A reflection on today's Scripture:

I don't believe I've ever read today's First Reading!

I know the story about Joseph being thrown in the cistern by his brothers and left to die, but I never read about the day the brothers came face to face with their quilt and the brother they betrayed.

The story has it that Joseph hid his identity from his brothers when they came begging and required them to bring him their youngest brother in order to receive the food they desperately needed.

This account from Holy Scripture reminds me that there is always a day of reckoning, a time when all of us will face the consequences of our sinful ways.

We might foolishly think that our sinfulness is of no consequence and is long past and forgotten. Then, as with the brothers, out of nowhere, some extraordinary and unexpected time and circumstances will force us to recall how we have deviated from the path of goodness.

Let us not wait for that inescapable day, but anticipate it by praying for the grace of forgiveness and the resolve to sin no more.

By God's mercy and the suffering and death of Jesus, we have been forgiven; let us share the Good News.
