Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

June 25 A..D. 2009

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Genesis 16:1-12, 15-16 or Genesis 16:6b-12, 15-16
Psalm 106:1b-2, 3-4a, 4b-5
Matthew 7:21-29

A reflection on today's Scripture:

I can remember from my earliest days being taught the parable of the builder who built on sand and the builder who built on solid rock. The parable and its teaching are actually quite simple: one should build a solid faith foundation from the beginning so that he can withstand the storms that will certainly come later in life. And he who fails to build on a solid foundation will certainly see things come crashing down when trouble hits. But I believe there is more to this than appears on the surface.

When architects and engineers design a building, they do so in such a way that the foundation and, therefore, the structure that sits upon it will last for its entire useful life. Engineers check soil conditions and other factors to determine how deep the footings need to be placed to ensure a building will last 50 or 100 years or more and only rarely does a foundation need to be reworked in later years to shore it up. There are countless structures around the world where the foundations have never been touched since they were laid down. But this is not necessarily the case with us humans and our faith.

We need to continuously reinforce our foundations through prayer, careful study of the scripture and reception of the sacraments. We are not buildings, of course, and while we may have a great foundation that was started when we were young and just learning, we must continue to add to that foundation in order to withstand the storms that will come again and again in our lives.
