A reflection on today's Scripture:
Many of my non-Catholic friends have asked me over the years why Catholics worship saints. When I explain to them that we do not worship saints they ask just what exactly it is we do. I further explain that the saints not only intercede for us but offer us very good examples of being Christian and living the Christian life. This is a tradition that goes back to the birth of the Church as we see today in celebrating the feast of the apostle Barnabas.
In our reading today from the Acts of the Apostles, we hear that the apostles in Jerusalem had received word of some new believers in Antioch and elsewhere. To verify this and to make sure what was happening was truly the work of the Lord, they sent Barnabas to have a look. Barnabas was very pleased with what he saw. Then, "he rejoiced and encouraged them all to remain faithful to the Lord in firmness of heart." His fellow apostles trusted Barnabas and knew he would do the good work of the Lord, as the passage in Acts further says, "For he was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and faith." Then he (with Paul) stayed with them quite a long time, further teaching them and bringing them along in their new faith.
This is a great example for us to follow. Do we rejoice and encourage others when we find them richly blessed in their faith? Are we trusted by our brothers and sisters in the Church to faithfully carry out the Lord's work? Do we remain with those who are struggling or who are new in the faith to teach and further encourage them?
Barnabas was a perfect example for us. He rejoiced when he found the new Christians; he was trusted by the Church to faithfully carry out the Lord's work; and he remained with those new in the faith to teach and further encourage them.
